About Us

Welcome and thank you. On June 30th, 2017 Taoiseach Leo Varadkar appointed Waterford TD John Deasy as a special envoy to the United States Congress to work for undocumented Irish. This survey is part of a fact-finding mission conducted by independent researchers at the Clinton Institute for American Studies at University College Dublin on behalf of special envoy Deasy. With the support of Senator Billy Lawless and Chicago Irish Immigrant Support, we are starting this research in Chicago. We are relying on the Chicago Irish to get a big response so we can get the information we need to affect change. So be ‘Chicago Strong’ and follow the link below to the short survey.

Why participate?
Deputy Deasy is keen to acquire information on the number of undocumented Irish in the US and the challenges they currently face. The number of undocumented Irish in the US is currently estimated at 50,000. The goal of this survey to gain a more contemporary estimate of that number. We also want to learn more about the needs and challenges of the undocumented Irish in Chicago so you will also be asked about your family and employment situation. You are not asked to enter any personal details to the survey such as your name, address, email address or phone number. This survey is completely anonymous and confidential. If you have any concerns about confidentiality please contact the research team liam.kennedy@ucd.ie or gemma.mcnulty@ucd.ie

Fill in the survey

The survey takes approximately 15 minutes. Your participation in the survey is anonymous and voluntary. You will not be compensated for your participation. However, your insight is crucial for addressing the issue of the undocumented Irish in the United States. We will NOT collect any form of identifying information (please do not include your name, addresses, or any other identifying information in the responses). The results of the survey will be used to inform the policy of the Irish Government on the undocumented Irish in the United States and in academic journals. We have also used a European server to host our survey to limit any potential traceability.
